Greek Life at Bethany College is a big deal on campus. There are a total of 7 fraternities and sororities that are a part of the college. Each organization holds their own values and morals that they strive and live by. More specifically, Alpha Sigma Phi of Bethany College goes by the motto ‘To Better the Man’. Alpha Sigma Phi is a storied organization at Bethany College. The organization’s chapter Beta Gamma was founded back in 1929. The chapter has experienced a lot of success and has made an impact on the Bethany College campus. Beta Gamma chapter reported a strong recruitment in the fall of 2017, with a new member class of 11 who have joined the brotherhood, which enabled the house being awarded the ‘Best New Member Class” award for the fourth consecutive year. The house currently accommodates a total of 43 brothers, which lists as the most out of all greek houses on campus
The 2017-2018 school year for the men of Alpha Sigma Phi has been a very productive year as a chapter. The Beta Gamma Chapter has gained national recognition for excellence at Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity’s summer leadership programs where the organization earned a Bronze Cup for four consecutive years. That leadership program is known as the ‘Elevate’ International Leadership Conference that took place at North Carolina State University. The gentlemen had a wonderful experience on their 4-day venture. Later in the summer of 2018, the men of Alpha Sigma Phi will head over to Indianapolis, Indiana where they will be in attendance of the 55th Grand Chapter. Also in the 2017-2018 school year, Alpha Sig took home several awards. The gentlemen were awarded for their fundraising event ‘Dial-a-Dog’ at the College’s Rising Stars Awards Show. Also during the Bethany College Greek Week, Alpha Sig was awarded and recognized as the Greek Week winners, and the Greek Sing winners taking home two trophies.
Most recently, Alpha Sigma Phi, Beta Gamma Chapter held their first ever ‘Alpha Woman’ event. ‘Alpha Woman’ is an empowerment and philanthropic event, with the theme “Show off your Power” for the woman. Donations were accepted for the YWCA of Wheeling. The event itself was a success filled with lots of fun and laughter. The event was put together by recruitment chair Kerry Kerr.
To piggyback on some of the success of the men of Alpha Sig, it’s only right that the leaders be successful as well. In the fall of 2017 Alpha Sig’s Zachary Lowe served as President of the Beta Gamma chapter. Zachary Lowe is a decorated individual on the Bethany College campus. He is heavily involved with the campus and well respected. Mr. Lowe was a part of the Bethany Bison football team where he served as a senior leader. Homecoming was a big day for Zachary as he was recognized at Homecoming King of the College. Lastly, to finish the year Zach Lowe was recognized as a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American. With all of the accolades and recognition, Zachary continued to be a leader or the house. Lowe took the house seriously and made sure that it was a priority despite the other things he may have to deal with.
Fast forward to the second semester, a new face is introduced in Presidency in Junior Joseph Fiasco. Much like Zach Lowe, Fiasco is well respected and well known throughout campus. Joseph Fiasco was also a team leader on the Bethany football team, where he was recognized as an All-PAC 2nd Team, and earned ECAC Defensive Player of the Week. I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with President Fiasco to see some of his thought pertaining to Alpha Sigma Phi. When I asked Mr. Fiasco what influenced him to make a run for presidency, he stated; “On the Elevate trip, I gained more knowledge of what Alpha Sigma Phi was truly about. That experience gave me the confidence to step up and be a leader for my chapter” Joseph has been just that for the Beta Gamma chapter. With the semester coming to an end, I asked Joeseph what has his experience been like? Fiasco answered “The experience has been wonderful because it involves leading and being around the men you call brothers. The responsibility can be daunting at times with everything that goes on, but it is all worth it because of the purpose it serves.” Speaking with Joseph, it is evident that he means well and wants nothing but the best for the Beta Gamma Chapter.
Moving forward onto the next school year, the men of Alpha Sigma Phi Beta Gamma chapter seek to continue their tier of success and productivity within the college. Alpha Sig’s presence is known throughout campus, and the gentlemen want to ensure that they are always seen in a positive light. Their goal is to continue their progress and maintaining great relationships with other houses on campus, faculty/staff, and the Alpha Sigma Phi Beta Gamma alumni.
