The newest addition to campus this school year is the new bison statue.
Boomer the Bison is the mascot of the school, so it only makes sense that there is a statue of a bison on the campus. The statue arrived in August at the begging of the 2018-2019 school year. Since its arrival, the bison has been a staple on the Bethany College campus. Many people both on campus and visiting campus have stopped to take pictures with the new bison. It is one of the first things you see when you enter main campus, and it always catches peoples’ eyes when they visit.
The new bison statue sits between Richardson, Morlan Hall, Phillips Hall, and the library right in the middle of campus. You can’t miss it. It also is on the notorious green circle. If you walk in the green circle, it is said to be bad luck on campus. When the new statue came, the green circle had to be rebuilt. Interviewers asked Jay Eisenhauer, Bethany’s physical plant director, about the project. He explained how the circle was rebuilt and how the bison was put into place saying “Yes we rebuilt the green circle. We used six inches of concrete reinforced rebar, and we also put additional tabs or cleats on the bison so it would help to hold it into place”. The statue only took about half an hour to put into place and President Rodenberg chose which way she wanted the bison to face. It faces towards the library watching all of the students walking to class and cars driving by.
Some students were asked about the superstition on the green circle. It has been a superstition for many years that if you step in the green circle you will fail your next test or even a class that you are taking. Although there are some students who do not believe in the superstition and try to walk on it anyway, they usually still end up failing their next test. One student said “Freshman year I stepped in the green circle, and I don’t want to say, but I failed my first math class my freshman year, so ever since then I have not stepped in the green circle”.
Other students were asked about their thoughts on the new bison statue and if they think it is a good addition to the campus. Another student who was interviewed said “I think the new bison statue is a good addition to the campus. Last year they installed a bison statue in front of the recreation center when you enter Bethany. I think this statue goes with the other one because it is on main campus”. Another student said “I like the new bison because it is in a good spot to take pictures with”.
Hopefully the new bison statue will catch the eye of visitors and prospective students who may eventually choose to come to Bethany. Students say the statue is okay to touch even though it is in the green circle, just don’t step in it.
